The First 10 Things to Do After Getting Engaged

11/8/2018

Congratulations! You just got engaged, hooray! As your adrenaline, excitement, and tears reced from your significant other popping the question, all the thoughts of wedding planning rush into your head.  You may start to feel overwhelmed and question what your next move should be. Well, worry not because we’ve listed the 10 things you should do after saying “yes” and slipping that gorgeous ring onto your finger.

1. Celebrate – You just got engaged to the love of your life! Take some time for the two of you to celebrate becoming engaged. Pop the champagne, enjoy a nice dinner, or spend some time just basking in the moment. You’ll soon be caught up in all the details of your wedding, so savor this time for just the two of you!
Picture

2. Share the News
– We know you’re excited to tell everyone about your engagement, but there are a couple things you should know. Posting that ring selfie to Instagram or Facebook right away may be tempting, but it’s an engagement no-no. Family and friends won’t enjoy finding out about your big news through social media. Your parents should be the first people you tell, either in person or by phone but not through text! A phone call to family and friends should be done next. Once you’ve told everyone close to you, then you can share that wonderful ring selfie with the world.

3. Throw a Party
– You’ve told everyone your good news, now it’s time to celebrate with them! Share the joy of your engagement by having a party. Be sure to carefully select the people you invite as they should also be invited to the wedding.

4. Resize Your Ring – This should be done ASAP. That sparkly bling on your finger may be a little too loose or too snug. You want it to fit perfectly to prevent the risk of losing it (or losing circulation in your finger!). Resizing a ring could take just a few hours, or, at most, a few days.

5. Insure Your Ring – This is an important step, and often forgotten by couples. If your ring is ever lost, stolen, or damaged, you’ll be glad you insured it. You may be able to insure the ring through your home owner or renter’s insurance, otherwise set it up as a separate policy. Talk to your insurance agent about coverage for if the ring or stones ever need to be repaired or replaced. Having an official appraisal done may be required before adding the ring onto your policy.

6. Discuss a Budget – Before you start making any wedding decisions, sit down with your fiancé and develop a budget. Figure out how much you have to spend and if your families are making any contributions. You and your fiancé should both agree on the budget. No matter what type of wedding you have, it will cost money. So, start a wedding savings account and deposit a set amount of money to go towards wedding expenses.

7. Start a Guest List – This is a good time to start thinking about who you want to invite to your wedding. In general, how big of a wedding do you envision? Is this an intimate celebration or a giant party? Some other things to think about that determine the size, are where you’ll cut off family invites, if you want to invite children, plus one’s, and how many people can you invite and stay within budget. Don't forget that the location of the wedding may also play into the number of guests who can attend from your initial guest list. Destination weddings tend to have fewer guests in attendance simply because of the travel required.

8. Big Picture – What type of wedding are you envisioning? Reflect on your style and consider what possibilities you have for your dream wedding. Maybe you want a big formal ballroom wedding or a simple rustic barn wedding. Would you prefer a Sunday morning ceremony or Saturday afternoon? The choices and combinations are endless with what kind of wedding you want. Look through Pinterest, magazines, blogs, and other resources too start collecting ideas that inspire you.
9. Set a Date – So you don’t necessarily have to select your exact date, but you should consider a date. What month do you prefer to get married in? Are you looking to get married this year or a couple years from now? Having a general idea of when you’d like to get married will be a nice start for planning. Keep in mind that locally here in Wisconsin, the Fall months of September and October have become prime wedding season, and those months may book up quicker than you think.

Serving Up the Best Food Options for Your Wedding Celebration

11/8/2018

One of the biggest decisions couples must make for their wedding is deciding what food to serve their guests. Many are stuck between the idea of choosing a plated or buffet style, but nowadays there are so many more options to choose from! We’ve listed some great ideas to help you figure out the best way to serve up your meals.
Picture

1. Plated / Sit-down dinner
: This is a classic, traditional choice where guests are all seated and served a formal dinner. Couples often offer 2-3 meal options for guests to choose from. They are then usually served 3 courses; an appetizer/salad, entrée, and dessert. A plated meal option is elegant and easy for guests to mingle and eat their food, but this option is more expensive. Make sure this style fits your theme & budget!
2. Buffets: Are you having a large wedding? Then you may want to consider a buffet. This serving option usually features long tables of a variety of food. Guests will love being able to choose which foods they want and how much. Buffets can become disorganized if lines become too long and may not have the elegant look you wish to achieve, but they are usually a nice option for saving money (be sure to watch how much food you request!) and a great way for guests to mingle. You may want to consider hiring catering staff to serve your guests in the buffet line. This helps prevent guests from struggling to hold their plate of food while serving themselves. Another perk of hiring catering staff is that this helps with portion control and prevents the risk of food running out before everyone has had a chance to have some. One final note on buffets, many caterers will not allow you to take leftovers, due to food safety regulations, this is where portion control is important. You want to be sure there is enough food for everyone, but no one wants to pay for extra pans that you can't take home.

3. Cocktail Party
: This is a more recent trend for wedding receptions. A cocktail party option is perfect for couples who are looking for a more casual style and want guests to mingle all night. Smaller weddings and weddings with late afternoon/evening ceremonies are ideal for this serving style. Make sure you have plenty of hors d’oeuvres to keep guests satisfied. It’s also a good idea to make sure everyone knows not to expect a dinner, you don’t want any hungry guests asking where the rest of the food is!

4. Family Style
: This is a fun way for guests to dine! If you’re looking to have your wedding feel more intimate and family oriented, this could be a great option. Guests are seated at tables with large portions of food where they help themselves and then pass around to the rest of the table. This is perfect for smaller, more casual weddings that are looking to save money. Guests will feel like they’re at home for dinner! Seconds anyone?

5. Food Stations: Food stations are somewhat of a mix between plated and buffet. Stations offer different foods at different tables spread out around the room. Guests can roam around to pick and choose the food they’d like to eat and bring it back to their table to enjoy. Food stations are usually open for a few hours, so while some guests are dancing, others can enjoy a bite to eat. Your bill may go up because more chefs will be required. If you’re looking to incorporate themes into your food, this would be a great way to do so!

6. Food Trucks
: An enjoyable, trendy, and entertaining way to serve food to your guests. Ideal for outdoor receptions, food trucks are a unique style that many guests may not have experienced before. Although they can be costly, this serving style is a fun, interactive option for your celebration!
